FILLINGS/RESTORATIONS OVERVIEW
Time is allowed for bone to heal and grow around the dental implant. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. A support post (abutment) is then placed on the implant and a new replacement tooth (crown) is placed on top of the abutment. In many cases, a temporary replacement tooth can be attached to the implant immediately after it is placed. If all of your teeth are missing, a variety of treatment options are available to support the replacement teeth.
DISADVANTAGES OF SILVER AMALGAM FILLINGS:
Silver, or metal, amalgam fillings have several drawbacks. The edges of the silver filling can wear down, become weak or break. This results in the tooth not being protected and lets cavities get started once again. With age, the metal of a silver filling expands, contracts, and it can break. Often, a tooth with a metal amalgam filling can break.
They can corrode, leak and cause stains on your teeth and gums.
Fortunately, silver fillings can safely be replaced with Tooth-Colored Restorations.
ADVANTAGES OF TOOTH-COLORED COMPOSITE RESTORATIONS
There are many advantages to tooth-colored, composite restorations. Resin onlays are bonded to the teeth creating a tight, superior fit to the natural tooth over silver amalgam restorations. Such restorations can be used in instances where much of the tooth structure has been lost. The tooth remains intact and stronger.
Another advantage to bonded composite resin restorations is often less healthy tooth structure needs to be removed in order to have a composite restoration placed. The resin wears like natural teeth and does not require placement at the gum line, which is healthier for your gums!

REPLACING SILVER FILLINGS WITH A TOOTH COLORED RESTORATION
You can have your silver fillings replaced with bonded composite restorations. During your appointment:
- A rubber dam is placed over your tooth. This helps to isolate your mouth and prevent any accidental swallowing or aspiration of debris and mercury during the procedure.
- The metal filling is removed, along with any decay, and the tooth is prepared for bonding.
- Composite resin is placed, contoured, and cured. As a final step, the composite resin is polished smooth.
Your teeth are restored to a natural look and feel with a strong restoration and, more importantly, the tooth is protected!
